POPI, a NGO of the country, its ECATTO project, supported by UKaid arranged a view exchange meeting with Kishoreganj’s journalists at POPI house conference room on Thursday. POPI ECATTO project manager Faridul Alam presided over the meeting.
According to an EACTTO project survey case study in Kishoreganj district, at least 57 cases of rape and 198 cases of abuse of women and children have been registered in the 10 months from January to October last year.
A total of 13 cases of rape have been registered in Kishoreganj Sadar, 2 in Hossainpur and 3 in Pakundia in the three upazilas of the district and a total of 58 cases of rape of women and children have been registered in Kishoreganj Sadar, 36, in Hossainpur 2 and 17 in Pakundia.
A total of 122 child marriages took place in 8 unions of these three upazilas in 9 months from July last year to March this year.
Besides, 156 child marriages have been stopped during this period. The unions are Yashodal, Maria and Binnati in Kishoreganj Sadar upazila, Chandipasha and Sukhia in Pakundia upazila and Shahedal and Pumdi in Hossainpur upazila.”
These child marriages taking place in various ways. Child marriages due to unawareness of parents, lack of law enforcement agencies, registration of child marriages just looking at the affidavit without verifying the certificate of some dishonest marriage registers. This is having a negative impact on the family and society. The media can play an effective role overcoming the situation.
