Vietnam seeks to develop int’l rice brand name

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a plan on developing Vietnamese rice brand name by 2020 and a vision to 2030, aiming to build international brand name for the product.
According to the plan, by 2020, Vietnam strives to have 20 percent of Vietnamese rice to be exported under Vietnamese rice brand. By 2030, Vietnamese rice will become a leading rice brand globally in terms of quality and food safety, with as many as 50 percent of the exporting rice to have Vietnamese rice brand name, according to the website of Vietnamese government on Friday.
In order to realize the targets, the plan puts forward measures to promote the position of Vietnamese rice, including supporting businesses in building material areas, linking value chain, improving seed quality, technical support, quality management, among others.
The plan sets priority on building three specialty rice varieties in Vietnam’s southern Mekong River Delta into national rice brand name.
Vietnam exported some 7.5 million tons of rice in 2014 via both official and cross-border export transactions. In 2015, the country targeted to export 7-7.5 million tons of rice.
Vietnam has been one of the top rice exporters with Vietnamese rice presenting in 135 countries and regions worldwide.
