Gallamary bears blood of thousands of martyrs
A Correspondent , Khulna
The month of December comes and with it comes the time of remembering martyrs of 1971 Liberation War who valiantly paved the way to achieve victory.
During the Liberation War, the peaceful people of Bangladesh were oppressed by the Pakistani occupied forcse and their collaborators. The oppression turned into assassination, rape, and murder of lakhs of people. They dumped the bodies in several places including mass graves, ponds, rivers and ditches. Such a mass grave is Gallamary in Khulna, three kilometres away from the main city.
According to Khulna Zila Parishad, early on 2009, a project was taken involving Tk 10 crore to construct a monument of independence. The project included constructing the main monument, red tiles around the monument, footpath, parking yard, ambit, gate, security shed, restaurant, flower garden, waterfalls and so on.
The construction cost of the main monument was fixed at Tk 2 crore 16 lakh and 31 thousand. But, the matter of regret is that the project has not been completed yet due to financial insolvency. Now, the question arises whether the entire work would be completed.
Sources said, Khulna Zila Parishad floated tender two times to build the monument allotting Tk 2.16 crore by the Ministry of Local Government Rural Development after approval the project. The construction of the main monument was completed by November, 2011.
On March 2011, architect of the monument Aminul Islam Emon advised the authority concerned to complete the monument as per design while visiting it.
Meanwhile, in March of 2011, Khulna Zila Parishad authority sent a letter to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) asking for Tk 8 crore with a view to completing it. The LGED recommended to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs to allocate the money to complete the monument within April of 2014. Now, the monument has turned into a den of drug addicts since it was not completed yet, said an official of LGED, seeking anonymity, and adding that the ministry concerned didn’t allot the money though Khulna Zila Parishad sent the letter.
While talking to journalists , Administrator of Khulna Zila Parishad Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid said, the main monument was built at the cost of Tk 2.16 crore after getting money from the Ministry concerned in 2011.
“We couldn’t complete the monument as per design. We have sent letters to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, but there was no response,” the Administrator said.
The monument will be the second largest independence monument of the country if it is completed, he said, adding that a reunification of freedom fighters is likely to be held after its completion.
In 1995, the main Monument of Gallamary has been built under the joint initiative of the then Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Kazi Reazul Haque and Khulna Police Super Awlad Hossain.
