The 45th anniversary of the Victory Day was celebrated in different districts on Friday through various programmes with a renewed pledge to make the country prosperous as well as militancy and terrorism free. Our correspondents and agencies report:
Khulna Correspondent says: People of Khulna celebrated the 46th Victory Day on Friday paying rich tributes to the three million martyrs for their supreme sacrifice for the country and the numerous women who were tortured, violated and killed during the Liberation War.
On this day in 1971, the Pakistan army surrendered at Rescourse Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) at 4.31 pm in Dhaka.
To mark the day, different organisations including government, semi-government, autonomous bodies, educational institutions, political parties and professional bodies organised different programmes honouring the national heroes during the Liberation War, waving national flags, singing patriotic songs and calling for defeating militant forces and those who are trying to foil the trials of war criminals while resisting all kinds of communal force.
Khulna district administration celebrated the Bangalees’ glorious victory over the Pakistani occupation forces, pledging to establish a non-communal and prosperous Bangladesh with the spirit of the Liberation War.
The day was heralded by a 31-gun salute at dawn at the Khulna Police Lines Ground.
Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdus Samad hoisted the national flag at Khulna Zila School Ground and took salute from the parade.
Khulna Shishu Academy organised an art and a painting competition for children on the occasion. A discussion meeting and a reception to the freedom fighters was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
People from all walks of life placed wreaths at the Gallamary monument on the day at 6 am.
Khulna Betar broadcast special programmes while the local newspapers published special supplements on the occasion.
Chaired by Khulna City Unit Awami League president Talukder Abdul Khaleque, MP, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Khulna district unit AL President Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid and city unit AL general secretary Mizanur Rahman Mizan, MP.
Khulna University (KU), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Khulna Press Club, Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ), 1971: Genocide and Torture Archive Museum and different socio-cultural and political parties celebrated the Victory Day in a befitting manner.
Chuadanga Correspondent reports: The 45th Victory Day was celebrated in the district head quarters and four upazillas of chuadanga district with a fresh pledge to materialist the dreams of the martyrs and lead the country to prosperity by eradicating poverty, diseases and illiteracy.
To mark the Day the Chuadanga district administration Chalked out a week long celebrate program jointly with different social cultural organization.
The day programme began with bombing of 31 gun salute, placing wreaths at Shaeed Hassan Squre and hanging national Flag a top all public and government building and offices. The highlight of the day was the march-past participated by Police, BNCC, Ansar VDP, boy scouts, girls guides and the members various children’s organizations.
DC and SP of Chuadanga were present at the March-past. Other highlight of the day were discussion meeting, Seminars, Symposia, Special prayers, seeking divine blessing for the martyred freedom fighters distribution of sweets, improved diet among the inmates of hospital, orphanages.
RU Correspondent reports: The 45th Victory Day was celebrated at Rajshahi University campus on Friday with paying tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
The university authorities and different political and socio-cultural organizations of the campus celebrated the day with much enthusiasm.
The national and university flags were hoisted atop the administrative building, residential hall and other buildings of the university with rising of the sun while different buildings were decorated with colorful lightings.
The day’s programme on campus began with placing wreaths at the university shaheed minar by the vice chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin at 7:00am where RU Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Treasurer Prof Sayen Uddin Ahmed were present, among others.
They observed one minute silence there in respect of martyrs. Earlier, Rajshahi University Journalist Association (RUJA), RU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League, Bangladesh Chhatra Union placed wreaths at shaheed minar at first hours of the day.
Baraigram (Natore) Correspondent adds: Baraigram Victory Day was observed in a befitting manner in Baraigram upazila under Natore district on Friday.
On the occasion, upazila administration, Awami League, BNP, educational institutions, Joy Bangla Samajik Andolon organization arranged programs separately. Of them, upazila administration accorded reception to 200 freedom fighters formally at the upazila auditorium. The meeting was presided over by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer Israth Farzana. Former State Minister, M.P of Natore-4 Constituency Prof. Abdul Kuddus was present as a Chief Guest and Bonpara Pouro Mayor K.M.Jakir Hossain, Upazila AL Chairman Abdul Jalil PK, Principal Abdur Razzak Mollah, Upazila Agriculture officer Ikbal Ahmed, Upazila Engineer Tahajjoth Hossain were present as special guests.
The chief guest Prof. Abdul Kuddus M.P distributed `prize-bonds’ of Tk 200 and cash Tk 50 to each freedom fighter with great honour as a honourable prize.
Jessore correspondent adds: Elaborated programmes were chalked out to mark the Victory Day on Friday. The programmes include placing wreath at the memorial, march past, procession, discussions, walking competitions, free treatments, receptions to the freedom fighters, art competitions for children, exhibitions of documentary, T-20 cricket match, special prayers, football matches, sports of students and cultural programmes, said Dr Humayun Kabir, DC , Jessore.
BSS from Narayanganj reports: People from all strata of the society here on Friday celebrated the 46th Victory Day paying homage to the martyred who laid down their lives during the Liberation War in 1971 and vowed to stamp out militancy and terrorism from the country.
Narayanganj district administration chalked out elaborate programmes in celebration of the day.
The day’s programme began with a 31-gun salute at Chashara Victory Monument at one minute past 12 midnight. National flag was hoisted atop all public and private buildings at 6am.
The portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were garlanded by the leaders and activists of Awami League at its office on B.B Road in that morning.
Wreaths were placed by lawmakers AKM Selim Osman and AKM Shamim Osman, president of Narayanganj District Awami League Abdul Hai, Deputy Commissioner Rabbi Miah and Police Super Moinul Hoq at the monument in the morning.
DCr Rabbi Miah took the salute at the march past of freedom fighters, police, Ansar, VDP, Fire Service and Civil Defence, Bangladesh Scouts, Rover Scouts, Girl Guides, students of school, college and madrasas at Masdair Osmany Stadium at 9am.
BSS from Manikganj says: The Victory Day was celebrated here on Friday in a befitting manner paying homage to the martyred who laid down their lives to liberate the country.
Different political parties, socio-cultural organizations and people of all walks of life observed the day with various programmes. Manikganj district administration observed the day amid great enthusiasm and elaborate programmes. The day’s programme was started with a 31-gun salute at dawn.

The national flag was hoisted atop all the public and private buildings.
The other programmes included placing wreaths at the memorial of martyred freedom fighters, victory procession, assembly and display of BNCC, Boys Scouts, Girl Guides and students of schools and colleges at the Shaheed Miraj -Tapan stadium.
Deputy commissioner of Manikganj Rashida Ferdouse hoisted the national flag ceremonially and took the salute at the assembly.

The day’s program began with 31 gun salute at local police line along with hoisting of national flag atop all private and public buildings. People of all ages and groups thronged at the martyred memorial plaque at Goalchamat area of the town to place floral wreaths. Later, a victory rally marched to a mass grave located at the southern side of the Sheikh Jamal stadium.
Colorful march past and parade held at the local stadium participated by police, BNCC, scout and other school students. The ceremonial flag was hoisted by Deputy Commissioner Begum Umme Salma Tanzia and Police Super Shubhash Chandra Saha.
A reception accorded to the families of the martyred and living freedom fighters at Kabi Jasimuddin hall.
