Maria Mohsin :
Bangladesh got the freedom after nine months long fight against Pakistan on December 16 in 1971. From last 43 year, this county is celebrating this day as its Victory Day. But the story of this celebration has changed a lot in these years. The story of our liberation war and our freedom fighters are not unknown to any of us anymore. But the new story of celebrating the Victory Day should not be untold. The love, respect and care these generation shows for their county in all December month long can’t be unrecognised. The generation has change, so the way of celebration has change too, but in a good way.
People use to wear dress which are combination of green and red in line with the national flag and decorate the house with the national flag. But now Victory Day is not just a day to celebrate for the young generation. If one go out of home in the day one can see how these generation has bring the color green and red not only in their dresses, but also in their life. The respect for the country and the flag is shown the whole December month long. Every TV channel of the country shows the flag in the screen the whole month long.
The specific location like Dhaka University is decorated and prepared to celebrate the day for month long. On the day, every club, union, company, school and locality arrange cultural program, art competition and different gram shows to engage the people to celebrate the Victory Day, rather then celebration it sitting at home and watching TV programmes.
The schools are given order to teach and make the kids know about our county in these kinds of days. Now not only the government organisations, also many private companies are sponsoring different programmes like creating human flag or singing along the national anthem.
The youth of Bangladesh represents their country’s proud history in different social media. In the month of December, the maximum social media IDs of Bangladeshi people turned in to Red and Green to honor the 9-month struggle of the freedom fighters and represent the Victory Day to the whole world.
A Facebook user says, “I live out of county for my job. I feel so proud when anyone from here ask me what you have given in you profile picture, because then I get the opportunity to tell them, in the honor of our county every Bangladeshi use the national flag in their profile picture the whole month long for the Victory Day. Their reaction after that is most special for me, because they cannot even believe we can spend an entire month for that one day celebration. I feel proud of being a Bangalee that time.”
Another user said, “When foreigners appreciate me for changing our profile picture for our victory day, I feel like, my county may not be as rich and developed like the others, but we really are rich in one side, that is love and respect for our county we represent in front of the world.”
Many recent situations of our county shows, Bangalis still can fight for what they want, they still can gather by leaving all works for the purpose of their country. It may be for political, emotional or justice reasons, but they still can sit together to think for their country. They may not show it in everyday life. They may show the love for their county only for the month of December. But they do show the love, they do say they care, they still think for the country, they still pray for the freedom fighters and I don’t think any other county dose this in the a way Bangladesh dose.
The green part of the flag symbolises the green Bangladesh whereas the red circle reflects the glory of liberation. Today’s Bangladesh not only dresses up in green and red, they mix these two colors in to every part and activity of their life. Many may comment that we are being ‘One Month’s Banglalee. So what if it is for one month, we are at least doing all these for our county. Isn’t it batter then doing nothing at all, isn’t it batter then wishing people on the occasion day only like every other county, isn’t it batter than enjoying the public holiday sitting at home and watching the Patriotic programmes, isn’t is better than waiting for the day only for getting good sale deals like other county does? So, aren’t we better than any other county of the world in case of patriotism? The best part of being Bangalee is most of us really feels proud of being Bangladeshi which is still rear in many other parts of the world.
