Victory Day imbibes us to make victory meaningful to all

THE nation celebrates today the 46th Anniversary of Victory of our independence that Bangladesh achieved through a long nine-month liberation war sacrificing three million lives of freedom fighters and ordinary people defying torture and killing of Pakistani occupation forces.
We remember our valiant freedom fighters and armed forces on this occasion who brought the dawn of liberation with the War of Independence that started on March 26, 1971 and culminated in Victory on December 16. It is sad we have lost so many freedom fighters and regular forces in the battlegrounds. Today our heart goes to their immortal sacrifice; we feel proud of them and those alive with us for winning us the freedom.
But we can’t miss to mention on this occasion that the nation is still striving to enjoy the true test of freedom in absence of a proper system to vote freely and where abduction and insecurity of life is haunting many. We believe collective efforts are needed by all to overcome these handicaps to let everybody enjoy the fruits of victory and freedom.
We can’t miss the occasion to equally remember the help and sacrifice of the Indian army and political leadership without which the war could have been much longer and destruction of human lives and materials ever larger. While we deny any domination of India over Bangladesh, it is equally true that their soldiers shed blood and they sheltered millions of people to keep alive the dream of liberation through the terrible time.
We are happy by this time that the nation has made significant socio-economic progress on the way to prosperity leaving behind the shackle of abject poverty and terrible deprivation under Pakistani occupation. The success is noticeable almost at all levels as Bangladesh is moving towards achieving the status of a middle-income nation by 2021. Our people have proved business leadership and entrepreneurial competence and it is left for political leaders now to equally prove worthy leadership to materialize the dream of the common people to live in peace, prosperity and in better security.
The division within the nation must go and exploitation of the nation by a handful corrupt people should stop. Victory remains incomplete so long the poor remain marginalized. We must ensure human rights and safety by improving an accountable system of governance to give people the feeling that they are protected. They have nothing to be worried. We have to be positive to make positive achievements in all walks of life.
On the Victory Day, we must know what victory is and whose victory it is. Our people did not fight for replacing one government by another, but for replacing autocracy with democracy.
