SIX persons were killed and at least 25 injured in a devastating fire that broke out at a high rise Alauddin Tower near Raj Luxmi Complex in the city’s Uttara Sector – 4 on Friday evening. The fire originated due to an explosion which resulted as a lift of the building collapsed on the basement. This accident has shown us how vulnerable we are even in posh shopping centres. There is no scope to say that the lift collapsed due to over loading. Because lift does not move if its load becomes more than at per. So it can be assumed that problem was with the rope of the lift. It was damaged earlier somehow. Maintenance department was not careful about it and did not do necessary repair works. It resulted in this disaster.City life is becoming more and more complicated and dependence on machine is growing day by day. In this situation proper maintenance of machinery and equipment is gaining importance. We regularly see news in the media about fatal accidents due to lack of maintenance. Explosion in gas line, freeze, TV, short circuit etc are increasing. One of the main causes of these accidents is that we are not properly trained in using these sophisticated technologies. Six persons burnt alive in a shopping center is hard to accept. This number may increase as some admitted in the hospital are seriously injured. They were there in a happy mood and enjoying Eid shopping. But their families are suffering from deep sorrow now.The shopping establishment is responsible for safety of the users of lifts. The victims are to be compensated. They are to get it under law. Treating our people’s lives as valueless cannot be acceptable.
