‘Vested quarter promotes tobacco cultivation to cripple economy’

Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia said putting their feet into the trap of an international conspiracy, a vested quarter has been trying to cripple the national economy encouraging tobacco cultivation by ruining arable land.
He said this on Monday while speaking as the chief guest at a view exchange programme on what is to be done in setting up Health Promotion Foundation to contain the use of tobacco, prevent infectious diseases and assure healthcare facilities. The programme was organised by ‘Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust and Protect Journalists’ at the Media Centre of the Jatiya Sangsad in the city.
Attaching importance to Health Promotion Foundation for reaching the healthcare facilities at the doorsteps of the people and for increasing awareness against drugs and discarding the adulterated foods, the Deputy Speaker said public awareness should be raised at the grassroots level on prevention of different diseases and their remedies through coordinated campaign of the foundation.
Alongside, he said that journalists should keep the government aware of the health risks through their write-ups.
The Deputy Speaker called upon the Health Promotion Foundation to carry out research activities to check spreading of different deadly diseases. Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Md Shahabuddin, Dr Md Rustam Ali Farazy, MP, Md Israfil Alam, MP, Kazi Rosy, MP, and Umme Razia Kajol, MP participated in the view-exchange programme.
Senior Vice-president of National Anti-Tuberculosis Association of Bangladesh (NATAB) Mozaffar Hossain Paltu was present on the occasion.
