bdnews24.com :Jammat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami’s war crimes verdict will be implemented quickly once it is upheld by the appeals court, Law Minister Anisul Huq has said. The war crimes tribunal sentenced him to hang till death on Wednesday, nearly a year after the case was wrapped up.”On a personal note, I am satisfied with the tribunal’s verdict. The government is satisfied as well. We accept the verdict and measures will be taken to implement it fast.”What we will now do is to hold the appeal hearing quickly to uphold the verdict and implement it” said Huq.Refuting the defence lawyers’ criticism that the tribunal had overstepped its jurisdiction in saying that the biggest mistake was to make Nizami a minister of Liberated Bangladesh, the minister said: “The judiciary is independent. The tribunal’s neutrality cannot be questioned. They have ruled according to the law.”In its verdict the tribunal said that eight of the 16 charges levelled against the Jamaat leader had been proven. He has been given the death sentence for four and life in prison for the rest. The prosecution says the verdict established “justice and rule of law”, while the defence calls it as “most unhappy judgment”.
