The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday fixed Wednesday to deliver its verdict on a appeal petition filed by two members, including its leader Mufti Abdul Hannan, of the banned organisation Harkat-ul-Jihad challenging their death penalty awarded by the High Court (HC) in a case filed on charge of grenade attack on ex-British envoy to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury in 2004.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the date after hearing the appeal petition.
Earlier on November 30, the Supreme Court started hearing the appeal filed by two death row convicts-Mufti Hannan and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul-against the High Court order.
Two Huji men filed the appeal petition with the Appellate Division on July 14 this year.
On February 11, a HC bench delivered the verdict upholding the death sentence given to Mufti Abdul Hannan, Sharif Shahedul Alam and Delwar Hossain, and life imprisonment to Mufti Hannan’s brother Mohibullah and Mufti Moinuddin.
Anwar Choudhury and 51 others were injured while three, including two police officials, were killed in a grenade attack at Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) shrine in Sylhet on May 21, 2004.
