Verdict on Mojahid’s appeal on June 16

Staff Reporter :The Supreme Court on Wednesday set June 16 to pass its verdict on the appeal of death row convict Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid.The four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, fixed the date on the conclusion of appeal hearing. .Attorney General Mahbubey Alam placed submission on the concluding day, pleading that the allegations against Mujahid were proved beyond any reasonable doubt and the death sentence is an appropriate punishment for his misdeeds. He was involved in the killings of Martyred journalist Sirajuddin Hossain and musician Altaf Mahmud. Apart from that, he was involved in different kinds of atrocities like murder, genocide, torture, rape, deportation and confinement. The defence completed its arguments on Tuesday with Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain and Advocate SM Shahjahan placing submissions. They argued on 115 points, saying that the allegations against Mujahid had no legal base and the he was not involved in any crime in 1971.Earlier, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced death to Mujahid, the Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, on July 17, 2013 for his involvement in the crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. The 65-year-old former Al Badr commander was found guilty in five charges out of seven allegations. He was awarded death penalty in three charges, imprisoned for life in one and five years term in the other charge.Mujahid filed an appeal on August 11 in the same year against the Tribunal’s judgment, laming his innocence. Meanwhile, another suspect of crimes against humanity of 1971 Mohammad Shamsuddoha died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. He was arrested from Moheshkhali of Cox’s Bazar on May 24. According to sources, the 90-year-old suspect died of old age complications.
