In a reaction to the verdict of the Holey Artisan Café attack, Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam called it a breakthrough against the militancy in Bangladesh.
He was speaking with the reporters at his office on Wednesday after the verdict had been announced by a court of law.
The chief law officer of the state was of the view that a social movement was needed to eradicate the militancy from the country.
Judge of the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal of Dhaka, Md Mujibur Rahman, awarded death penalty to seven accused for their involvement in 2016 Holey Artisan Café attack that claimed the lives of 22 people, including 17 foreigners.
The AG said also, “This verdict proves that our country is sincere and capable of taking swift action to end militancy. The café attack greatly diminished the image of our country. But the verdict is an evidence of the government’s commitment towards eliminating militancy and establishing rule of law in the country.”
“The verdict will be sent to the High Court for the approval of the death references. Then we will try to argue with our all efforts so that the verdict might be upheld by the High Court,” added the AG.
“This verdict is a massage to the other militants of the country. It is matter of regret that the youths of the solvent families who study in the well-established educational institutions are getting involved with the militancy. Time has come to organize a social movement so that the students could not get any lesson about militancy in any educational institutions,” also said the AG.
The seven convicts are Jahangir Hossain, Aslam Hossain Rash, Hadisur Rahman, Rakibul Hasan Regan, Md Abdus Sabur Khan, Shariful Islam Khaled and Mamunur Rashid Ripon. They were also fined Tk 50,000 each.
Another charge sheeted accused Mizanur Rahman alias Boro Mizan was acquitted of the charge as allegations brought against him could not be proved.
