The High Court (HC) on Wednesday fixed January 29 to deliver verdict on a writ petition filed challenging the legality of broadcasting of three Indian television channel, Star Jalsha, Star Plus and Zee Bangla in Bangladesh.
The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice J B M Hassan passed the order after concluding the hearing on the rule issued earlier.
Advocate Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan took part in the hearing in favor of the petitioner. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Saju stood for the State, while Advocate Abdul Motin Khasru and Advocate Shamsul Hasan stood for the channels.
Advocate Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan said that these three channels are causing erosions of society, culture and values in Bangladesh. Our own culture is under threat. These channels harming study of our students, causing quarrel between husbands and wives, extra-marital affairs and even murders.
Advocate Shahin Ara Laily, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the petition on August in 2014 after a report published in the newspaper that said, many subsided in Bangladesh due to fail buying a ‘Pakhi Jama’ marketed in the name of Pakhi, a character of a serial broadcasted in Star Jalsah.
The HC issued a rule on October 19 in 2014 after hearing the petition. On January 8, 2017, the HC started the final hearing and concluded yesterday.
