Verdict in case against Mizan, Basir Feb 23

A Dhaka court yesterday decided to deliver the verdict in a graft case lodged against suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mizanur Rahman and suspended Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Khandaker Enamul Basir on February 23.
Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of the
Special Judge’s Court-4 of Dhaka passed the order fixing the date on Thursday.
The prosecution on January 24 said it had been able to prove all the charges framed against the accused beyond all reasonable doubt, and expected maximum penalty for the accused.
Earlier on January 12, the accused pleaded not guilty in their statements submitted to the court. The court completed recording testimonies of the witnesses in the case on December 23, last year. Of the 17 witnesses, 12 testified in the case.
The ACC filed the case with its Integrated District Office in Dhaka under the Money Laundering Prevention Act on July 16, 2019.
According to the case docket, Enamul Basir took Tk 40 lakh in bribe from the then Deputy Inspector General of Police Mizanur Rahman, to ensure impunity for him.
Basir also demanded a gas-fuelled car as gift from the DIG, the case statement further says.
Earlier on June 10, the ACC suspended its Director Khandaker Enamul Basir on charge of leaking official information to DIG Mizan, breaching code of conduct and possessing illegal wealth.
On February 9, 2020, Judge KM Imrul Kayesh of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s of Dhaka accepted the charge sheet of the case and transferred the case to the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka for further proceedings. This court framed charges against the two accused on March 18, 2020.
ACC Director Sheikh Mohammad Fanafilya on January 19, 2020, submitted the charge sheet of the case against Mizanur Rahman and Khandaker Enamul Basir to the court on the charge of leaking information and taking bribe.
