Finance Minister AMA Muhith has approved a Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges proposal to provide an extended grace period to tax evading vehicle owners.
Md Abu Naser, a finance official with the ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, said that the finance minister had given his nod of approval to the proposal on Tuesday.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, he said that about 600,000 such vehicles existed on paper although the actual number could well be half that number.
He explained that in reality the number could be expected to be less because many of these cars have become outmoded by now, but since their registration numbers continued to exist in government records, they were also factored in the count.
He said that such defaulting owners were having their penalty increased as a result of non-payment of taxes and fee on time.
“Till Apr 15, defaulters can pay their outstanding tax and fee without fear of being charged penalty (on late payment). If they fail to avail themselves of this opportunity, a special drive will be organised and they will have to pay along with the penalty,” he said.
He said that a similar opportunity was provided in 2014.
A total revenue of Tk 2.75 billion was recovered through the facility, prompting the similar relaxation again.
The senior finance official with the Finance Ministry, Md Shahedur Rahman, confirmed to bdnews24.com that the finance minister had approved a proposal to this effect. He said that the proposal would come into force after issuing of a notification in this regard.
