Vegetables get dearer as downpour shrinks supply

The prices of some vegetables have shot up to Tk 40 per kilogram at different kitchen markets across the capital on Saturday due to the downpour for the last few days.
But, it has been a bit respite for the city consumers as the prices of ginger, garlic and chicken have gone down Tk 30 per kilogram, at the same time.
Traders said the prices of some vegetables have increased to Tk 10 to Tk 40 per kilogram as supply of the vegetables shrank due to abrupt flooding caused by recent torrential rain at home and upstream.
Md Shamim, a vegetable vendor at Karwan Bazar Kitchen Market, said that the price of per kg of green chilli went up to Tk 10 while eggplants Tk 20 this week compared to that of the previous week.
Carrot price saw a hike of Tk 30 to Tk 40 while tomato Tk 30 per kilogram on Saturday, however, the price of cucumber came down to Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kilogram.
Besides, per kilogram of farmed chicken is being sold at Tk 150 which was Tk 160 in the previous week. Semi-highbred Sonali chicken is being sold at Tk 260 which was Tk 290 at the same time.
The prices of rice, lentils and other essentials remained unchanged in the current week, the correspondent found after visiting the city’s kitchen markets.
