Cultivation target of vegetables under Intensive Rabi Crop Production Programme was achieved in five upazilas of the district in the current season due to favourable weather condition and availability of agro-inputs.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said the farmers of the district brought 5,875 hectares of land under vegetable cultivation against the target of 4,500 hectares in five upazilas of the district this season.
Of the total cultivable lands 1,634 hectares were brought in Sadar upazila, 1,820 hectares in Panchbibi, 720 hectares in Akkelpur, 875 hectares in Khetlal and 826 hectares in Kalai upazila, the sources said.
Sagor Ali of Khasbatta village under Panchbibi upazila said he had cultivated brinjal on five decimals of land and due to favourable weather condition he could earn Taka 7,000 without cost.
“As I got double benefit in comparison with paddy cultivation in the last year, I cultivated brinjal on 30 decimals of land during this season,” he added.
Deputy Director of DAE AZM Sabbir Ebne Jahan said the cultivation target of vegetables was achieved in the district in the current season due to favourable climate condition during the cultivation period and massive use of locally made organic fertiliser.
“We expect more than 1,33,000 tonnes of vegetables against the production target of 1,20,000 tonnes in the season,” he said.
