Vegetables, beef, chicken price rises

Vegetables, beef and boiler chicken were selling at higher price on Friday at the weekend in the city markets. But rice price decreased slightly at the both wholesale and retail markets of the city.
Horse radish and parbal were selling at Tk 120 and Tk 90 per kg respectively at Moghbazar, Eskaton and Elephant Road. But parbal sells at Tk 50 per kg in the South Goran area. Of others vegetables, balsam apple was selling at Tk 70 to 80 per kg, green chilli at Tk 60 to 70, bean at Tk 25 to 30, brinjal at Tk 40 to 50, snake gourd at Tk 50, bitter gourd at Tk 60 to 70, french at Tk 80, okra Tk 60 to 70, cucumber at Tk 30 to 35, tomato at Tk 30, potato at Tk10 to 14, carrot at Tk 25 to 30, radish at Tk 16, turnip at Tk 25, pea at 40 to 50, cauliflower at Tk 20 to 30 per piece, cabbage at Tk 20 per piece, teasel gourd at Tk 60, gourd at Tk 40 to 60 piece based on size and coriander leaves at Tk 100 per kg.
The price of potato is falling alarmingly. Farmers fear massive losses. A producer said, the production cost of potato on one bigha of land is Tk 14,000 to 15,000, but the sale price is Tk 2000 only at present. “We are unable to preserve potato for want of cold storages. Moreover, 30 percents of last year’s production
have remained unsold and are remaining in the cold storages,” said the farmer.
Though the price is high in the city, the farmers are not getting its benefits. The middlemen are making monopoly business, said a retired government employee Shafiqul Haque
As for fish, barbal and the scorpion fish were selling at Tk 700 to Tk 800 per kilo respectively, ruhit at Tk 280 to 450, carp at Tk 230 to Tk 400, lobster at Tk 1,000 to 1,200, pangas at Tk 170 to 200, tilapia at Tk 180 to Tk 230, mola for Tk 250, climbing fish at Tk 250 to 600, lata at Tk 200 to Tk 300, tatkini at Tk 230 to Tk 250, sheat fish at Tk 300 to Tk 500, small fry fish for Tk 250 and butter fish at Tk 660 to Tk 700, sea fishes Marcel at Tk 250 to 270, Surma fish at Tk 280 to 340 and Hilsha (medium size) at Tk600 to 800. Besides, the price of different kinds of dry fishes also increased by about Tk 20 to 50 per kg.
Beef was selling at Tk 360 per kg, red meat at Tk 550 and the boiler at Tk 160 to 170. Beef and red meat were selling at Tk 300 to 320 per kg and at Tk 400-450 respectively before the ongoing blockade and hartal.
Pigeon was selling at Tk 180 to 210 a pair and bird quyel at Tk 200 per four pieces. The egg (chicken) was selling at Tk 28 per hali (4 pieces) and egg (duck) at Tk 40 to Tk 44.
 Prices of finer varieties of rice like miniket and Najirshail, medium varieties like brridhan-28, brridhan-29 (haski), paijam, kajol lata declined by Tk 2-3 per kg at the major wholesale markets in the city in last seven days.
Different qualities of briidhan-28 and 29 varieties were selling between Tk36 and 40 per kg, Miniket at Tk 42 and Tk45, Najirshail at Tk 46-50, BR-11 at Tk 30-31, swarna at Tk 28-30 per kg in the Babu Bazar, Badamtoli, Jatrabari, Kochukhet and Mohammadpur wholesale markets on Friday.  
The price of different varieties of red lentil also rose by Tk four per kg and it was selling between Tk 80 and Tk 135. Mash sells at Tk 84, gram at Tk 70 and green gram at Tk 120.
The price of bottled soybean oil (five liters) remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 490-Tk 510 in the city’s kitchen markets. The unpacked soybean oil was retailing at Tk 85 to 95 per litre.
New varieties of onion were selling at Tk 45 to 50 per kg, imported onion at Tk 42, imported garlic was selling at Tk 90 to 100 per kg and local one at Tk 70. Imported ginger was selling at Tk 110 to 130, local produce at Tk 80 to Tk 90 only.
