History reveals that Bengal Agricultural University has been remodeled into Shere -e Bangla Agricultural University and Chief Minister of Bengal, Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque was the founder father of the first Agricultural Institution on December 11, 1938.
His target was to develop agricultural sector in the light of modern technologies. The institution was called The Bengal Agriculture Institute. Later it was renamed as East Bengal Agricultural Institute. In the year 1971, this university was again renamed as Bangladesh Agricultural Institute. Students had the scope to study in this sector under Dhaka University. The graduates of Institute played a golden role in providing sustenance to the famine victims also they contributed in education, research and expansion in agricultural sectorThe institute was remodeled into Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in 1961.
After this, in 1964, the institute started operating as an under college educational organization . There was new hope after Awami League came into power in 1996. All demanded that this institute be converted into an university. Teachers were the main force who demanded this change in the status of this institute.
A team was founded whose committee members included members of Bangladesh Agricultural Institute (BAI) and Old Boys Association. A petition was submitted to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the year 2000 to remodel this institute into Agricultural University by a team led by Mahbub-uz-zaman.
An order was given to look into the possibilities present to convert this institute into an university which came from the Prime Minister’s office . The University Grant Commission (UGC) of the university took the investigation matter into their own hands. In order to make the movement speedy, the realization committee decided to celebrate golden jubilee of the university . The date fixed to observe this was fixed at January 6, 2001 and the then and present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the chief guest on this occasion.
Hasina declared on January 6, 2001 that this institute be called an university and a bill was passed in the national parliament in this connection in July 9, 2001.
The Prime Minister had made Professor Dr. Shahadat Ullah the first Vice Chancellor of this university on July 15, 2001.
When the foundation stone was laid by Sheikh Hasina. Although the history of this institute running as a public university is only 12 years old, as the eldest educational institute of the subcontinent, it has a history of 76 years. Mostly the foundation of this subcontinent’s agricultural education surrounded this educational institute.
The dream that was behind the foundation of this university turned into a nightmare with the change in power in 2001. No way did the dream of development of this university reach the expected target. Mostly Vice Chancellors for this university have been recruited from the professors of this University.
They started making this institution into a business venture instead of focusing on its development. As a result, this has become a ground for fostering corruption. In the fiscal year 2002 to 2010, only 29 crore of taka has been utilized for the development purpose. For the smooth running of this new educational institution , new faculties and divisions have to be opened.
Due to the lack of proper initiatives for research and expansion and also due to lack of political support a slackening in the developmental flow of this university has resulted which was not expected. In July 26, 2012, the present government again made Professor Dr. Shahadat Ullah as the Vice Chancellor of this university. From then, this university is running very smoothly.
At present, there are three faculties in the university, these are , University Agricultural Department, Agribusiness management faculty, Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine faculty. In order to meet the requirements of students and also to keep pace with the present day and time, the Agribusinesss Management faculty has been renamed as BBA (Agribusiness) .
It is expected that the Fisheries faculty and Seed Technology Institute can be started from next year. In the Honor’s and Masters’ level, around 3000 students and in Ph.D. level, 37 students are studying at present. The students who have passed out from this university are playing a key role in development of the country in agricultural field.
Also in international level, they are exhibiting their skills. The total number of teachers in this university are 230, number of officials are 193. Besides education, for research purpose there are farms for agricultural, gardening farms and also farms for cattle, poultry and fisheries.
At present there are 5 halls in the university. Of them 5 are for male and 2 for female students. ‘Sources’ is a research system that has been founded to spread the research and development works of this institute to the general public and also for assimilation of all research works of the university.
The ruling party is very agricultural friendly and have always taken public pleasing steps to make the entire nation’s dream a reality. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has passed an order of 91 crore and 27 lakh taka ( at present 100 crore and 39 lakh taka) on November 2, 2011 in a meeting for the development of this university. At that time, the government completed a couple of developmental projects. Among these are Nabab Shirazud-dou-lah Hall which is an investment of around 34 crore taka, and for female students farmer’s jewel Sheikh Hasina Hall.
The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated these two halls on October 23, 2013 to overcome the housing crisis of students. All works for smooth running of these halls are in completion stage. The virtual class, mini abware office, digital archive, seminar room with all modern facilities which are under the jurisprudence of higher education selection committee have also been inaugurated.
Shere-e-Bangla Agricultural University is a newly developed and modern University. All sector of this university is required in order to develop this university into a complete educational institution. The university management has requested the government to keep an on this university.
We also request all the citizens of the country and the alumni of Shere-e- Bangla Agricultural University to extend their hands of co-operations for the development of their institution.
