The 21st Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) has broken all its previous records of VAT collection till afternoon of Friday as visitors swarming to the stalls and pavilions of different companies from the very beginning of the annual trade caravan, sources said.
They said the participants are witnessing sound business and thus boosting collection of VAT in the fair.
According to the customs officials posted at the fair, around Tk16 million VAT is realised till Friday afternoon – the 27th day of the month-long fair which is almost double of the corresponding period
The customs officials, however, hoped that the VAT realisation would cross Tk 20 million at the end of the ongoing mega expo.
Rakibul Hasan, deputy commissioner of Customs Excise and VAT, said a large number of buyers and visitors are swarming to the stalls and pavilions of different companies from the very beginning of the DITF’16.
With the increase of visitors and buyers, the participants are also witnessing sound business and thus the amount of revenue earnings as VAT were also increased more than twice than the previous year, he added.
However, hundreds of thousands of city dwellers thronged in DITF on Friday, the last week’s public holiday of the annual trade caravan.
Long queues were found in ticket counters, all entry points and in the gates if the trade fare.
Almost all corners of the fare ground were full of visitors. Underage kids with their parents found facing difficulties in free movement due to crowded.
Participants of the stalls and pavilions of different companies were found facing difficulties to respond their customers.
Many visitors found standing in queues for long time in front of cash counters to pay for their purchased goods.
Highest gathering were seen in the stalls of household, plastic and cosmetic goods. Besides, food court and amusement corners have also in the top of highest visiting list.
“We are facing difficulties to handle customers after recruiting extra work force as the visitors gathering today (Friday) is more than our expectation,” Alim Al Razi, a sales person of Bengal Plastic said.
We were expecting a huge gathering, but the we have astonished of seeing the extra ordinary presence of the visitors, he added.
Meanwhile, most of the participants were alleged to capitalise visitors gathering in the fair ground.
Almost all of them announced discounts and free gifts to attract customers although customers claimed high prices of goods.
“We can buy a wooden made cutlery set with Tk 600 from outside the fair but here it is tagged Tk 830 after 25 percent discount. Similarly all other products of different stalls also have shown the same practice,” Nilutpal Tripura, a visitor claimed.
“We come here to have all things in one place at a competitive price but the price and quality of goods of DITF are of lower quality at higher price,” said another visitor, Nurun Nahar Mallik.
