Four people were arrested in connection with the killing of university student Keshob Ray Papon who died after being stabbed by muggers in the capital’s Tejgaon area on Tuesday night.
The accused are Jahangir alias Mutto Jahangir, 35, and Nuruzzaman alias Mamun, 23, and eighteen-year-old Jewel, said Mohammad Shahidullah, Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division in a briefing yesterday, hours after arresting the three snatchers suspected of mugging and killing the student.
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested another suspect Md Tuhin from Tongi on Thursday. RAB said Tuhin confessed to his involvement in snatching and killing Keshob.
“Jewel was arrested from Hatirjheel with a switchgear knife. Following his information, police arrested Jahangir who stopped Keshob by brandishing a switchgear knife, in Begunbari area and Nuruzzaman was arrested from Noakhali with the knife he used in the killing,” said the DC. Five snatchers were identified from 71 CCTV footage collected from the crime scene and surrounding areas, added the DC.
Keshob 24, a seventh-semester student of Computer Science and Engineering at Sonargaon University, resisted the muggers when they snatched his mobile phone leading to a scuffle.
At one point, Keshob grabbed Nuruzzaman while being stabbed indiscriminately which led him to bleed profusely and collapse on the ground.
Some pedestrians first took him to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. From there he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition where he died two hours later.
Keshob used to work as a part-time computer operator at a courier service office in Elephant Road to bear part of his university tuition expenses.
“I had to sacrifice my study to help cover the educational expenses of my brother who was always good in studies, as our father has been sick for the last two years,” Keshob’s younger brother Sumendra 18, who works as a construction worker, told the media.
