Varsity student killed in Ctg BCL factional clash

A student of Premier University in Chittagong was killed and two others were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League over establishing supremacy on the University campus on Tuesday.
Following the incident the University Administration in an emergency meeting closed the Varsity for indefinite period. Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr Anupam Sen confirmed the journalists on Tuesday of their decision to close the university. The deceased was identified as Sohel Ahmed, a student of MBA of the university. Injured Imtiaz and Rony Chandra Sheel were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment. Additional law enforcers have been deployed in and around the campus to avert further untoward incident.
Eyewitnesses said, a rehearsal for the freshers’ reception of BBA 31st batch was underway on its Dampara campus. As a sequel to the conflict, some 20-25 BCL men, equipped with sticks and sharp weapons, attacked the students of another group at about 1pm, leaving four critically injured. Of the injured, Sohel was first admitted to a local clinic. But for deterioration of his condition, Sohel was then shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
University Proctor Ahmed Razib Chowdhury told media that the incident took place following a conflict between two groups of BCL.
Officer-in-Charge of Chawkbazar Police Station Aziz Ahmed said, the police are looking into the matter and the culprits will be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, students of the university laid siege to Probortak Crossing in the Port City on Tuesday following the killing of a fellow student in an attack by the rival group.
During the blockade, enraged students also damaged the University’s administrative building.
They also barricaded Sholo Shahar Gate No 2 crossing and Lalkhan Bazar, and thereby created huge traffic congestion in the area.
