BSS, Chittagong :
Popular species of fish like Rui, Katla, Mrigel and Kaliboush on Friday released huge amount of eggs in the river Halda, the lone natural fish sanctuary in the country. This, according to experts, is the first event this year. Fisherman Kamal Uddin Swdagor told BSS the fry collectors collected satisfactory quantity of eggs early Tuesday as mother fishes released huge amount of eggs.
He confirmed that 2000 fishermen with 300 boats collected eggs on the first day of the season.
“Indiscriminate catching of mother fish (egg carrying), river pollution and unfavorable weather condition are the major causes of little spawning by the major carps this year” said Prof Monjurul Kibria of Zoology Department at Chittagong University.
The river Halda, as the saying goes, has for over a century been a spawning ground of such species of fishes and this river is the only natural breeding ground in the world where species of fish release eggs at a certain period of the monsoon.
