The colourful Bengali month of Falgun began yesterday coinciding with the arrival of Spring, better known as ‘Bashanto’ which was celebrated as a symbol of yellow and orange colour festival and the rebirth of nature.
The nature got a new look in vivid colours as trees discard old leaves paving ways for new cohorts to grow and resemble the farewell of winter and emergence of summer in the typical Bengali calendar each year.
The Amar Ekushey Boi Mela took on a festive look yesterday on the occasion of Pahela Falgun. Stalls of popular publications buzzed with book enthusiasts on the occasion. Meanwhile, people, especially the young, are set to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the city and elsewhere across the country with love fun, and festivities today.
Valentine’s Day is a time when people show feelings of love, affection and friendship.
In the capital, thousands of couples, some with their friends, are expected to gather on the Dhaka University campus and other popular hangouts in colourful apparels.
While most girls will be found wearing saris and flowers carefully, and quite enchantingly, tucked in their locks, their male partners will be wearing traditional panjabis and some carrying bouquets. Different socio-cultural organisations are scheduled to organise programmes in the city to mark the day.
Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an annual event celebrated on February 14.
It originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country.
