The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday caught an upazila education officer in Mymensingh red-handed while taking bribe.
A seven-member ACC team, led by its director Nasim Anwar, arrested Gafargaon Upazila education officer Anwarul Islam from his office at about 4 pm, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB.
Jahangir Alam, a schoolteacher, recently went to the local upazila education office seeking approval of a plan to spend an amount of Tk 40,000 allocated for his school under the
government’s school-based annual development work plan.
But, upazila education officer Anwarul Islam demanded Tk 10,000 through his staff to Jahangir. The victim then submitted a written compliant against the education officer with the Commission.
In consultation with the ACC officials, the plaintiff went to Gafargaon Upazila education officer again on Monday afternoon to give him Tk 10,000 in bribe. While receiving the money, the ACC team caught Anwarul red-handed.
The team also arrested higher division clerk Uttam Kumar Kar and office assistant ABM Siddiqur Rahman for assisting the upazila education officer in taking bribe.
The ACC officials also seized Tk 1.33 lakh from the procession of Anwarul Islam.
Later in the day, ACC assistant director Masurdur Rahman of Mymensingh Zila office filed a case with Gafargaon Police Station in connection with the incident.
