Sirajganj Sadar Upazila Chairman Riaz Uddin has been arrested for his suspected involvement in gold smuggling, seven months after police had confiscated about 56 kg gold from a house in Dhaka’s Paltan.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (media) Muntasirul Islam said the ruling Awami League leader was held from a house at Uttara on Wednesday.
The Detective Branch and the Customs department jointly raided the house of Mohammad Ali, owner of Ali Sweets at Paltan, and recovered five
sacks of local and foreign currency besides the gold on Dec 25 last year.
After he was arrested, Ali had pointed to his friend Riaz Uddin’s involvement.
Riaz, the ruling party’s Sirajganj unit organising secretary, had told bdnews24.com, “I don’t know that man (Ali). What he said about me is completely false.”
