Uttarsury: Noorjehan-Sarwar Murshid Cultural Centre unveiled its open call-winning artwork titled Khondito created by artist Sharad Das at a programme
held on its premises in the
capital’s Dhanmondi area on
August 1, said a press release.
Former dean of Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka Rafiqun Nabi was present as the chief guest while a jury of the open call selection panel artist Rokeya Sultana and artist Atia Islam Anney were also present as special guests in the programme, which was anchored by director of Uttarsury Mustafa Zaman.
Uttarsury: Noorjehan-Sarwar Murshid Cultural Centre launched the open call by the end of June and a total of 14 artists submitted their artworks till July 18. Artists Dhali Al Mamoon and Rokeya Sultana selected the best artwork.
Sharad Das, Assistant Professor at Chittagong University, created the artwork titled Khondito on a wall of Uttarsury: Noorjehan-Sarwar Murshid Cultural Centre. While talking in this regard, Sharad Das said, “The title of the artwork indicates that it deals with fragments. We get fragmented every day, our freedom of speech is fragmented and our history also gets fragmented with the shift of power. This artwork depicts those fragments we face in our everyday life.”
He also said, “In the artwork, I have heavily used metaphors. It took me a long time to collect chopped pieces of wood and incorporated them into the artwork. I have created chopped-up hands and legs portraying the sectarian violence and vandalised idols of deities.”
Artist Rokeya Sultana said, “A total of 14 artists had submitted their artworks to the open call. Primarily, we shortlisted three artists for the best artwork. Although all of them are talented young artists but we had to choose one artwork. The artwork of Sharad Das was selected the best. Sharad Das has created Khondito, which is unveiled today. I wish his success.”
