DU Correspondent :
Six hundred and twenty-seven teachers of the University Teachers Association of Bangladesh (UTAB) on Tuesday expressed deep concern over granting of forced leave to a Dhaka University (DU) teacher by the university syndicate.
The UTAB protested the illegal action against the Physics Department teacher Professor ABM Obaidul Islam and demanded immediate reversal of the previous decision taken on Sunday night. They said this in a written statement yesterday.
They said that the Physics Department Chairman Professor Azizur Rahman sold some equipment of the department beyond the knowledge of the finance committee. The committee is consisted of Professor Khandoker Sadat Hossain, Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, Dr Wahiduzzaman and Dr Naimul Islam. Professor Khandoker Sadat Hossain and Professor ABM Obaidul Islam went to chairman’s room to know how he took the decision without informing them. At one stage, the department Chairman Professor Azizur Rahman hurled abusive words at ABM Obaidul Islam. But unexpectedly, the university took action against Obaidul Islam instead of Professor Azizur Rahman.
They said that Professor ABM Obaidul Islam was the General Secretary of DU Teachers Association twice. ” The university syndicate’s decision against Professor ABM Obaidul Islam was totally a political agenda. It would never bring positive result.”
They also requested the university authorities to initiate a fair investigation of the incident.
UTAB President Professor AFM Yousuf Haider, Secretary General Professor Tahmina Akhter, Dr Abdul Aziz, Professor M Farid Ahmed, Dr Siddique Ahmed Chowdhury, Professor KM Shahadat, Dr Yarul Kabir, Dr MA Bashar, Dr Abdur Rashid, Dr Sukomol Barua, Professor Hosne Ara Begum, Professor Abul Hasnat and Professor Nazrul Islam signed the statement, among others.
