Rangpur Correspondent :
Use of chemical fertilisers has increased alarmingly in Rangpur Agriculture Zone in recent years posing serious threat to fertility of cultivable land.
Sources said , farmers of the region are using chemical fertilisers frequently on their lands which is reducing the nutrients in the soil , making the lands unfit for adequate crop production, sources further alleged.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said, during last four years the farmers under Rangpur agriculture region used around three lakh metric tonnes of urea fertiser on their lands to produce different types of crops.
Due to ignorance and lack of coordination between farmers and DAE use of such fertilisers is on the rise. As a result fertility and quality of crop lands are degrading drastically, sources said.
According to DAE official sources demand for chemical fertiliser in Rangpur agriculture zone was 1,28,700 metric tonnes in 2013-14 financial year. It was 1,35,100 metric tonnes in 2014-15 fiscal year and during the current fiscal it has increased to 1,46,000 metric tonnes.
Joynal Mia of Andarkota village in Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur said that he has been cultivating crops on his lands using chemical fertilisers for around 30 years. Most of the farmers of his areas are cultivating crops using such fertilisers instead of eco-friendly organic fertilisers.
According to agri-experts owing to rampant use of chemical fertilisers the quantity of necessary elements of soil such as nitrogen, zinc, potassium and other nutrients has reduced to a great extent.
DAE Rangpur office sources said , department is encouraging the farmers to use organic fertilisers. They are also motivating the cultivators to reduce the use of chemical fertiliser to retain soil fertility and also for the sake of a good production of crop, sources added.
