BSS, Narsingdi :
The production of summer vegetables has increased to a great extent in Narsingdi district due to use of modern technology replacing the traditional method of cultivation.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said farmers of the district used composed and organic fertilizers in their lands instead of chemical fertilizers.
They used the method of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in their vegetable fields for raising yields and getting poison-free vegetables.
The farmers used high yielding variety (HYV) of seeds and they reaped a good production of summer vegetables in the current season. Different kinds of summer vegetables like patal, ladiesfinger, koida, karala, sweet gourd, brinjal, kakrul, jingha, puishak, cucumber and arum grow plenty in Shibpur, Belabo, Sadar and Raipura upazilas of the district.
Deputy Director of DAE Narsingdi Subash Chandra Guain told BSS that the department fixed a target to bring 5,200 hectares of land under summer vegetable cultivation in the six upazilas of the district with production target of 68,200 tons. But farmers cultivated more than 5,800 hectares for the summer.
Narsingdi district is a vegetables surplus area and usually supply 30 to 40 percent of its production to the capital and other districts after meeting local demands.
