US Embassy in Dhaka in a statement on Saturday said that the rule of law, free and fair election, freedom of expression and freedom of media are indispensible for the strong footings of democracy.
The rights of the general people and the presence of private organisations defend the principles of democracy, the statement said.
The main inspiration that works behind the formation of the United Nations is the critical role of the citizens and the role of the plural civil society, it added.
The Embassy said, the declaration adopted in the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1998 enunciated that everyone has the right at individual and collective level, at national and international level to protect the human rights and other freedoms. The people of every country should have the right to preach human rights without intimidation, it added.
As US President Joe Biden said, “No democracy is perfect, and no democracy is ever final. Every gain made, every barrier broken, is the result of determined and unceasing work,”
