US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat on Thursday underscored the need for increasing bilateral trade between the two countries with a view to maximizing the economic growth.
“The bilateral trade between Bangladesh and United States would help both the nations to maximize their economic growth, which also generate new jobs and prosperity,” said the envoy while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 24th annual US Trade Show at Sonargaon Hotel.
American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bangladesh and the US Embassy jointly organised the three-day long trade show.
“Strengthening bilateral trade and investment would not only create jobs and prosperity but also help the countries to learn from each others. The US market is open to foreign investors, so, the Bangladeshi businessmen can take the opportunities for the further advancement of both countries economy,” Bernicat said.
Of the bilateral trade, Bangladesh exported goods worth $6 billion and imported goods worth $1 billion last year, she mentioned.
Addressing as the ceremony as chief guest, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed hoped that the United States would change its mindset on suspended GSP issue, claiming that Bangladesh has already fulfilled all the conditions tagged with the restoration of special tariff benefit in the US market.
Tofail said, the trade relations between Bangladesh and America is excellent and that is why total trade volume would exceed $7 billion at the end of the year. He said as a single country United States is in top position for the destination of Bangladeshi products.
“Our relations with the US are very good and both the countries have been maintaining since the independence of Bangladesh,” he added.
The commerce minister said, Bangladesh is moving forward to the economic development under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and it would be going on in future, which has already been acknowledged globally.
Asia Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC) Chairman Jackson Cox and AmCham Bangladesh President Nurul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
According to organizers, the aim of the trade show is to expanding the economic ties between the United States and Bangladesh. The exhibition is hosting 40 exhibitors in 64 booths, which will remain open to the public from 10:00am to 8:00pm.
Participants including Boeing Commercial Airlines, Coca-Cola, Ford Motor, MetLife, MasterCard International, VISA, Chevron Corporation, IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, Intel, Harvard University, Johnson & Johnson, ExxonMobil, and Pepsico International and others are showcasing their products.
The entry fee at the trade show is Taka 20. But, school students in uniform and other students with identity cards are exempted from the payment of the fee.
