US ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat has assured uninterrupted American support to readymade garments sector [RMG] of Bangladesh.
The US envoy came up with the assurance while addressing a meeting with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association [BGMEA] leaders at BGMEA Bhaban on Thursday.
“The US will always stay beside Bangladesh in achieving its goal,” the US envoy said. She, however, did not clear the issue of Generalized System of Preferences [GSP].
“Bangladesh has achieved much progress in assuring working environment, workers security and labour rights in the garment sector. But it [BD] will have to cross a long distance more to achieve international standard,” Bernicat said in the meeting.
She said: “America will provide all sorts of assistance to Bangladesh to obtain the target of exporting 50 billion dollar RMG export on the eve of its 50th anniversary of independence in 2021. Bangladesh has the capability to meet the challenge, but it must have to ensure the proper use of Labour Act first.”
Referring to the Rana Plaza fire, incident the US ambassador said, “The entrepreneurs of Bangladesh have already proved how to overcome a big crisis.
BGMEA president Atiqul Islam, vice-president Shahidullah Azim and other officials of the organization attended the meeting.
