Staff Reporter :
The issue of disappearance, killing and torture in Bangladesh has received an international recognition in the US Human Rights Report.
The international democratic world has been working on the events that are happening in Bangladesh and many other countries for a long time. Not that it is doing now. The United States of America has been publishing a report on this rights issue covering every country annually.
BNP Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the remarks in a press briefing at the BNP Chairperson’s political office at Gulshan on Saturday. The press conference was organized to inform about the meeting of the BNP highest policy-making forum held on Friday. BNP Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said,
“Very soon Awami League government will witness a strong opposition party they want.”
Mentioning that, “We are protesting against the corruption done during the government it means strong opposition exists in the country,” BNP Secretary General said, “But there is no strong opposition party in the parliament, because the incumbent government has not kept any democratic space in this country. But since the Awami League wants a strong opposition on the streets, they will get it in a very short time.”
In response to an election-centric question, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Whether the election will take place or not, it will depend on whether the election environment will be prevailing or not in the country.”
The BNP Secretary General said it in a virtual meeting of the BNP standing committee held on Friday. The party expressed concern about rejection of leave to appeal application of Dr. Zobaida Rahman in the court.
“The meeting called upon the judiciary to carry out its judicial functions independently with an impartial approach and without compromising with the government,” the BNP leader added.
Fakhrul also said, “BNP Standing Committee expressed grave concern at the recent TIB study on irregularities of purchasing coronavirus vaccinewith an amount about Tk 23,000 crore more than neighboring countries.
Besides, the meeting expressed deep concern at the recent dismissal of the reserve theft case of Bangladesh Bank in a USA court. The BNP leaders alleged that a case of was filed to cover up the theft activities.
BNP Standing Committee Members also demanded that legal action against the accused in the Bangladesh Bank theft incident and disclosing the correct information to the people immediately.
At the time, Mirza Fakhrul said that the decision to observe World Press Freedom Day on May 1 and May 3 on the occasion of International Workers’ Day was taken at a meeting of the standing committee.
BNP Standing Committee has expressed their concern at the rejection of leave to appeal petition of BNP acting Chairman Tareq Rahman’s wife and eminent physician Dr. Zubaida Rahman. Dr. Zobaida is a non-political doctor.
The Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) case is purely politically motivated and vindictive to involve Zobaida Rahman. The case was filed only to harass and humiliate the Zia family as there is no basis in the case.
