US envoy Miller pays homage to Bangabandhu

US Ambassador in Dhaka Earl R Miller visited Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s home district Gopalganj and paid rich tributes to him as the month of mourning began on August 1.
While visiting the Bangabandhu Mausoleum, Miller laid a floral wreath and observed a moment of silence. He visited Bangabandhu’s ancestral home and the adjacent museum to learn more about the life and legacy of Bangladesh’s founding father.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a US International Visitor Leadership Program participant in 1952, said the US Embassy in Dhaka on Friday.
On his way back to Dhaka, Miller visited the Padma Bridge construction site to see one of the 10 ongoing megaprojects driving development in Bangladesh. He met the project director and reiterated that the US, as a development partner of Bangladesh, is supportive of this and other infrastructure projects that benefit Bangladesh and the region.
Ambassador Miller also visited the Baniarchar Catholic Church in Gopalganj, where a bomb attack on June 3, 2001 killed 10 people and wounded many others. He visited the graves of the victims on the church grounds.
He reiterated US opposition to political and communal violence in conversation with the parish leadership and community. Miller applauded the efforts of Bangladeshis who are committed to inter-religious and inter-communal harmony.
Ambassador Miller met the Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner and the district’s police chief and discussed the political dynamics of the district and its economic drivers, including the local agricultural and manufacturing industries.
They also discussed the role of social and religious issues in the district and priority areas for district leadership.
