Ruling Awami League’s US chapter vice president Nazmul Islam was strangled to death after being hit on the head and face, doctors said.
New York police recovered the 55-year-old leader’s body early on Thursday (local time) from the Ozone Park area.
Doctors at Jamaica Hospital said Islam was dead when brought into the hospital.
Police have started an investigation into the murder but no breakthrough was reported until Friday evening.
US Awami League’s joint general secretary Abdus Samad Azad said police
were examining surveillance footage obtained from the area where Islam’s body was found.
Bangladesh’s permanent envoy to the UN, AKA Momen, said the dead leader was very active and has upset the whole community. He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had been notified about Islam’s death.
Islam, hailing from Sylhet’s Bianibazar, went to the US in 1982.
He secured a spot in US Awami League’s first full committee six years later. He came to Bangladesh about a week ago and met party chief Hasina. The Awami League leader’s namaz-e-janaza was held after the Jum’a prayers at the Al-Amin mosque in Ozone Park.
He was buried at the Washington Memorial Muslim graveyard on the outskirts of New York.
In 2002 another Bangladeshi was murdered in Ozone Park. Those involved with the killing have received various sentences.
