Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Saturday said that the government was planning to establish special economic zone across the country in the greater interest of the country’s economy.
“It will reduce the regional economic disparity”, said the minister while addressing an agreement signing ceremony between Chemtex, USA and Deshbondhu Group in a city hotel.
The minister appreciated both the companies’ initiative of jointly producing Polyester Staple Fibre (PSF) for the first time in the country. PSF is the main raw material of the spinning sector. Currently, its demand is three lakh metric tonnes, which is imported from abroad at a cost of $480 million per year, said the minister.
The government always encourages the business community to lessen dependency on import of industrial raw materials and to get themselves prepared to produce at home.
Spinning is an important sector for economic development of the country, but it now faces multifarious difficulties. The exporting countries increase the export value of the product without any notification. Still the business community imports the raw materials under duress.
According to the agreement, the both companies will implement a project at Shahzadpur Upazilla in Sirajganj district. The production cost of the project will be Tk 1,000 crore. PSF will be manufactured within two years. At least 8 000 people will be employed directly or indirectly in the project, said Chief Financial Officer of the Deshbondhu Group MA Bashir Ahmed.
The agreement signing ceremony was also attended by, among others, the President of Chemtex Sean Ma and Chairman of Deshbondhu Group Golam Mostafa.
