We would say the role of America is quite essential for organising collective move against savage military rule in Myanmar. America can get others involved.
While the US has called killings by Myanmar a case of ethnic cleansing and threatened targeted sanctions against Myanmar officials responsible – India’s role has not been favourable so far to be hopeful about exerting pressure on Myanmar to take back the Rohingya refugees. But if America comes along India will find difficult to be on the sidelines.
Actually, the US offer to partner with India was made during a recent regional visit to Dhaka by the Deputy Assistant for the region to the US President and Director for South and Central Asia Lisa Curtis. The Indian foreign secretary is scheduled to visit Dhaka next month, and we want to see a positive outcome about the Indo-US partnership and how it will tend to involve Bangladesh to end the crisis.
We must say the USA and the free world must move quickly to stop the change of demography of Rakhine State resettling Buddhist nationals in abandoned Rohingya villages. They can jointly work for quick repatriation of refugees to end prolonging the crisis. Indian cooperation is very important in this respect. We believe if USA, Australia and India work together, the stand off is bound to change.
