Dr Farzana Islam: First woman VC: Upholding dignity of JU is first priority

Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University [JU] Dr Farzana Islam has said that she would give highest priority to uphold the dignity of the university through excellent and quality research activities under fine academic atmosphere.
“The JU has been contributing to the country’s development by its brilliant students since its journey. At present, my prime task is to keep the academic session unharmed. My first priority is to uphold its reputation,” she said in an exclusive interview with The New Nation on Wednesday marking her first anniversary of chairing as VC.
The university got the country’s first ever female VC, Dr Farzana Islam, a Professor of Anthropology Department, on March 02, 2014 for four years.
After passing a successful one-year term, she said “Our primary target is to hold classes and examinations regularly.
We also want to hold the senate, syndicate, JUCSU [Jahangirnagar University Central Students Union] and others elections to ensure proper academic atmosphere.”
The VC also expressed her determination to curb the session jam and resist any kind of political violence on the campus. During her conversation with The New Nation, she also laid emphasis on women’s participation and contribution in every sector of society.
Pointing out that no big chaos had logged there during her one year term, Dr Farzana Islam said: “It was possible due to all-out cooperation from teachers, students, employees and staffs and administrative personalities. …I further urge for more cooperation from all concerned to make the university as the model of highest academic excellence.”
There has been remarkable change during my first one year as vice-chancellor, she said. “I have taken initiatives to restore the academic congenial atmosphere on the campus through constant discussion with the teachers of all opinions.”
Describing different administrative measures, Prof Farzana said, “Most of the departments are now running smoothly without session jam. In this regard, I arranged meetings with academic councils, senate and syndicate regularly. I also discussed with faculties, institutes and chiefs of different stages of the administration and accepted their suggestions, disregarding their political affiliation.”
During her charge two admission tests were held peacefully and the ever last convocation was also held successfully by this year on February 05.
In her one year tenure, at least 55 qualified teachers have got appointed in different departments. The VC said, “I tried to recruit qualified teachers. The budget allocated for this university is not a big one. Still we are utilizing it for developing infrastructure and laboratories. I am trying my best to increase the allocation in research sectors and to promote the quality of research.”
The JU, country’s only full residential university, was established in 1970 as a public university in in Savar Upazila of Dhaka. Its first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mafiz Uddin Ahmad took up office on September 24, 1970. The first group of students, a total of 150, was enrolled in four departments-Economics, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics. In 2014, the university had got a total of 14,500 students, 672 teachers, 206 staff and 1,200 other employees.
