A five-kilometer-long human chain was formed in the town of Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh on Tuesday demanding upgradation this upazila into a district.
The human chain, participated by the people of different professions, started at 12:00 p.m and continued for two hours.
About ten thousand students and teachers of educational institutions of this upazila joined the human chain. The human chain, organised by ‘.Gouripur Zila Bastabayan Sangram Committee’, demanded upgradation of Gouripur upazila into a district.
The human chain was attended by Chief of the advisory committee, a freedom fighter Dr. Capt. (Retd.) Alhajj Mujibur Rahman Fakir MP, Former State Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Convener Md. Abdul Ali, former mayor and Member Secretary Head Teacher Nurul Islam, Ex-President of Press Club
Nearly 20,000 people from Gouripur Municipality and 10 unions joined the human chain and expressed their solidarity. Later a public meeting was held in the afternoon at Harun Park of this town. Convener of Gouripur Zila Bastabayan Sangram Committee’ Md. Abdul Ali presided over the meeting while, Freedom Fighter Dr. Capt. (Retd.) Alhajj Mujibur Rahman Fakir MP, Former State Minister for Health & Family Welfare, was a chief guest.
Besides, Upazila AL Vice President Principal Md. Ruhul Amin, Upazila AL Vice President Dr. Helal Uddin, Upazila AL General Secretary Babu Bidu Bushan Das , AL Joint Secretary and Ex-President of Press Club Nurul Islam ,AL leader Abul Kalam Azad, Adv Jasim Uddin, Al leader Md Iqbal Hossain Jewel, Al leader Ronti Chowdhury, BNP leader Sharaf Uddin Khan Pathhan, JP leader Nur Mohammad Fakir and different professions-journalists, writers, teachers, up chairmen, municipal councilors, political leaders among others spoke on the occasion.
Speakers highlighted that they would keep on their all-out efforts to make the present government to declare Gouripur as the country’s 65th district through a district implementation committee to fulfill the long-cherished demand of the local people
