Unidentified miscreants have shot dead a member of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) in Khagrachharhi’s Ramgar Upazila.
The murder took place on Sunday morning at the Upazila’s Pashuram Ghat, police and locals said.
The deceased has been identified as Ranjan Chakma alias Biswas Member, 50, of Lakshmichharhi Upazila.
UPDF spokesperson Niron Chakma said Ranjan was an active member and blamed Santu Larma-led Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) for the killing.
“Ranjan Chakma was in that area for organisational purposes. Santu Larma’s people shot him down at the house he was staying and fled after they found him,” Niron alleged.
However, PCJSS Assistant Information Publicity Secretary Sajeeb Chakma denied the allegations.
Guimara Police Station OC Mostafizur Rahman told reporters that Ranjan was ambushed by the miscreants at Pashuram Ghat’s Buddhadhan Karbari village.
He died on the spot after getting shot, Rahman added.
The OC said Ramgarh police would be taking legal measures over the incident as it took place in an area under their jurisdiction.
Ramgarh Police Station OC Mainuddin said he was on way to the crime scene to collect the dead body.
