Leaders of United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) and its front organizations in a rally urged government to cancel 15th amendment of the constitution and to declare CHT as an autonomous area.
They put the demand in a discussion jointly organised by UPDF and Hill Women’s Federation at Swanirbhor area in the hill town with Democratic Youth Forum (DYF) on Saturday noon.
Khagrachhari district unit DYF Vice President Polash Chakma presided over the discussion.
DYF secretary Ratan Smrity Chakma, Parbatya Chhatra Parishad President Tapon Bikash Chakma, Hill Women’s Federation President Abonika Chakma and UPDF organizer Aungya Marma spoke, among others.
Leaders termed 15th amendment to the constitution controversial one which made ethnic minorities and their religion as second-class one. Terming it tarnished their images; they demanded annulment of 15th amendment.
The leaders also demanded CHT be declared an autonomous area aiming to ensure ethnic people’s rights and heritages.
They brought out a protest procession after the rally from Swanirbhor bazaar that marched towards Chengi Square in the hill town, but police stopped them at Upazila intersection and forced them to return.
