With the conclusion of the 11th general election, Awami League’s aspiring candidates for chairman have been preparing for the upazila parishad election in 13 upazilas of Sylhet.
The names of some of the contenders have already been announced as activists want to see their favourite leaders as chairmen. Potential candidates have also started lobbying in their party’s electoral areas.
However, no instructions have been given regarding the upazila parishad elections by the party’s central unit, according to the Sylhet District Awami League.
Awami League activists said those who are willing to be candidates in the upazila election are already mentally prepared. Once the general election ended smoothly, the upbeat election atmosphere remained in Bishwanath as well as the whole country.
Once the Election Commission announced the election manifesto, prospective contenders started lobbying for their respective parties.
The candidates who have declared they are in the running for the upazila chairman’s position in the upazilas, for the election, are: Member of Sylhet District Awami League Advizery Committee S.M Nunu Miah, Law Secretary of Bishwanath upazila Awami League Advocate Gias Uddin,
S.M Nunu Miah said: ‘Participation in the upazila election will involve using the party symbol. If the party nominates the candidate based on the desires of grassroots voters, then I am optimistic that I will receive the nomination.’
Commenting on the matter, Sylhet district Awami League General Secretary Alhaz Shofikur Rahman Chowdhury said: ‘Many have been running campaigns on social media sites expressing their desire to be candidates in the upcoming upazila election.
‘However, the potential candidates have not informed us of anything.’
The Election Commission (EC) wants to hold the Upazila Parishad election across Bangladesh in March. Secretary Helaluddin Ahmad announced this to reporters on January 2 (Wednesday) at the Election Commission building.
Warez Naeem selected chairman candidate by AL grassroot leaders, workers

As long as the upazila elections are coming closer, candidates are becoming active in public relations day by day.
The electoral wind has already started in the upazila .They are holding discussions with voters and public relation has been going on. The candidates are pledging their eligibility and highlighting development activities. Candidates are campaigning in different ways to vote for themselves .
To take the decision about the nomination of upazila chairman and other post , a meeting of grassroot level leaders and workers was held recently where a 5-member committee of Sherpur District Awami League was present .
In that meeting Jhenaigati Upazila Awami League President Abdullahel Warez Naeem got absolute support but his opponent Upazila Awami League General Secretary Amiruzzaman Labu did not get any support though he filed nomination papers among others .
Abdullahel Warez Naeem has a good reputation in the areas and he is associated with different educational institutions and social organizations .
Besides, Awami League rebel candidates are Jubo League Convenor Abul Kalam Azad, BSL’s former president Faruk Ahmed, Mizanur Rahman Milon and AKM Samedul Haque, General Secretary, National Socialist Party of the Upazila and existing upazila Chairman Aminul Islam Badshah who was elected from BNP in last term . Now he wants to fight as an independent candidate. He is stll Joint Secretary of District BNP and Convenor of upazila BNP .
