Armed criminals stormed the office of a government office of Baghaichhari upazila in Rangamati district and shot a union parishad member to death on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Samar Bijoy Chakma, 38, a member from ward-1 of Rupkar union parishad in the upazila.
A group of miscreants entered the project implementation officer (PIO) Nur Nabi’s office around 1pm and shot the UP member, said the PIO.
On information, police rushed in and found Bijoy’s body lying in the chair he was sitting before the gun attack.
However, the assailants managed to flee the scene by several motorcycles, the OC said.
Bijoy was talking to the PIO about a project when 2-3 people were standing outside the room and peeking inside.
One of them entered the room and shot Bijoy in the chest, police said.
“The miscreants arrived on motorbikes. They fled the scene shortly after the shooting,” said Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shariful Islam whose office was two rooms away from the PIO’s one.
Bijoy was a member of JSS-backed Jubo Samiti, said Baghaichhari upazila parishad Chairman Sudarshan Chakma, who is also law affairs secretary of the central committee of PCJSS (MN-Larma).
