UP member among two killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Two alleged drug peddlers, including a union parishad member, were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Friday.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Bakhtiar alias Moulvi Bakhtiar, a member of local union parishad, and Mohammad Taher.
Police said they arrested
 drug traders Yunus from Wabrang, and Bakhtiar and Taher from Kutupalong Rohingya camp in the early hours along with Yaba tablets.
As per information gleaned from them, police conducted a drive at the house of Noor Hossain, a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Saudi Arabia, to seize a big consignment of Yaba.
Noticing the presence of law enforcers, drug pushers opened fire on them forcing them to retaliate in self-defecen which triggered a gunfight.
After the skirmish, bullet-hit Bakhtiar and Taher were found lying on the ground and taken to Teknaf Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.
Tk 10 lakh in cash, 20,000 Yaba pills, five local guns and 17 bullets were also recovered from the spot.
The deceased were absconding accused in drug cases, police said.
