Rafiqul Islam Hawladar Babu, UP Chairman of Rampal Upazila in Bagerhat district, who was convicted by a court on the charge of physically assaulting a primary school mistress who was engaged in updating the voter list in the year 2014 as she denied to discharge her duties, according to his will, was suspended from his post on temporary basis.
This order was given in a notification signed by Md. Iftekhar Ahmed, Deputy Secretary of the ministry of the Local Government recently. In the same notification the UP Chairman was asked by the ministry to show cause why he (UP Chairman) should not be terminated finally form his post. The reply must be submitted to the concerned ministry within 10 working days through the DC, Bagerhat after the receipt of the notification.
It may be mentioned here that the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-2, Bagerhat convicted the UP Chairman and sentenced him to suffer rigorous imprisonment for 1year 6 months and to pay a fine of Tk.3 thousand in default to suffer another rigorous imprisonment for 30 days more (in the GR case No.94/2014) u/s 332 of BPC.
It was also stated in the notification that being an elected representative of the people he (UP Chairman) committed an offence which is against the interest of the people. So, the ministry of the Local Government terminated him (UP Chairman) from his post under section 34 (1) of the Union Parishad Act of 2009.
