A union parishad (UP) chairman has been suspended for marrying an under-aged girl in Kurigram.
The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives suspended Abu Taleb, chairman of the Buraburi UP under Ulipur upazila in Kurigram district, through an order on Tuesday (December 15).
The order was signed by Abu Zafar Ripon, senior assistant secretary of the ministry concerned.
The order states that Abu Taleb, chairman of Buraburi UP under Ulipur upazila in Kurigram district, married one Osman Borni changing her date of birth and violating the Child Marriage Prevention Act 2017 which was proved during an investigation. The Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram district was asked to take necessary action against the UP chairman concerned as per the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act 2009.
It also reads that the government thinks that in view of committing criminal offence by the UP Chairman, it is not desirable to exercise the union parishad’s authority by him. So, he was suspended from his position as per the clause 34 (1) of the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act 2009. The order has been issued in public interest and it will be effective as early as possible.
Ulipur upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Noor-e-Jannat Rumi also confirmed receiving the order from the ministry concerned.
On November 1, UP chairman Abu taleb, 45, married Bornita Osman Borni, a Class IX student, and daughter of physically challenged Bacchu Mia of village Dolon under his union. As the matter went viral on social media, the local administration came to know about the marriage. Later, the local administration formed an inquiry committee in this regard.
