A union parishad chairman in Cox’s Bazar and 32 others have been sued for allegedly torturing five people, including a woman and her two daughters, on Friday over “cattle theft” at Harbang union of Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria.
Parvin Akhter, one of the victims, filed the case with Chakaria Police Station this afternoon accusing four named people, including Harbang Union Parishad Chairman Miranur Islam and 30 unknown people, said Habibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of the police station.
The three others named accused are Nasir Uddin (28), Nazrul Islam (19) and Jasim Uddin, said the OC.
Police have already arrested the trio and sent them to jail by a court while UP Chairman Miranur has gone into hiding, said OC Habibur.
The three women-Parvin, her daughters Selina Akhter Sheuli and Rozina Akhter and two others Emran, Parvin’s son, and one Chuttu-were tortured in broad daylight and were paraded through villages with their hands bound by ropes.
The incident was orchestrated following the alleged instructions of Harbang Union Parishad Chairman Miranur Islam.
Following abuse and humiliation, the five were handed to Harbang police outpost. A video footage and some images of the incident went viral on social media on Saturday night, creating a public outcry.
A case was filed against the five for cattle theft with the police station on Friday night.
Yesterday, a court in Cox’s Bazar granted bail to Parvin and her two daughters in the case filed over “cattle theft”.
