UP chairman Ankhi suspended over Nasirnagar attack

The government has suspended Atiqur Rahman Ankhi, Haripur Union Parishad chairman in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria, in connection with the attack on the Hindu community.
LGRD and Cooperatives Ministry issued a circular on Monday in this regard, Local Government Division Deputy Secretary Mahbubur Rahman told UNB. Ankhi, also the prime accused in a case filed over the attack on the Hindu community in Nasirnagar, was suspended on January 15 last, said Mahbubur.
On October 30 last, some unruly people demolished 15 Hindu temples and vandalised over 100 houses in the upazila following a Facebook post that allegedly hurt the religious sentiment of the Muslim community.
Later, two cases were filed against 2,400 unidentified people in this connection. Ankhi went into hiding after the incident. Detectives on January 5 arrested the UP chairman from Bhatara in the capital in connection with the attack.
