The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is interested to extend cooperation for the development of tourism in Bangladesh.
The visiting UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai said this while paying a courtesy call on President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the President said tourism is an important sector for the socio-economic development and the government has been implementing various programmes, including structural development for the development of the sector.
Mentioning that Bangladesh has largest unbroken sea beach in the world, Abdul Hamid said Bangladesh has many sectors to attract tourists from across the world.
The President said there are many sites of Buddhist culture in Bangladesh which can attract foreign tourists. ‘International Conference on Developing Sustainable and Inclusive Buddhist Heritage in South Asia’s Buddhist Heartland’ would accelerate the development of the country’s tourism industry, he added.
Taleb Rifai said that the conference would play an important role in developing the tourism sector in Bangladesh.
Terming the tourism industry as clean industry, the UNWTO Secretary General said it does not put bad impact on environment rather it creates many employment opportunities, which accelerate overall development of a country.
He emphasized on increasing tourism-related facilities to attract foreign tourists in Bangladesh.
